And I think:
Perhaps, the greatest puzzle.
Alice asks this question of herself in Wonderland, but you and I—while certainly not in Wonderland—can still ask it of ourselves.
Who in the world am I?
It’s not that we need an answer, because there isn’t one. “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then,” says Alice. Who you are keeps changing. You shift, you evolve, you transform.
It is enough, I think, to ponder the question.
As it happens, there is more time these days to do so. And by ponder, I don’t mean judge or shame or critique; I mean observe and consider with some detachment.
Perhaps a better question would be: Who do I want to be?
I like this better because it gives you space, it gives you possibility, it gives you hope.
You are in attention. You stand up a little taller. You are taking the first step toward choosing the bigger life.
And given the choice, we must always choose the bigger life.
Maybe we’re not meant to, or even required to solve the great puzzles. But if we can manage to find and fit a few good pieces together, well, I think that makes life pretty wonderful.
